Our students will each have a turn next week, one night cooking then one night serving and then one night dining with one support person to dine with eg ; family or friend

This is so they can get an understanding of all the facets of a restaurant.

Their itinerary included a visit to Rotorua International Airport where they got a tour behind the scenes of customs and immigration followed by a presentation by the Rotorua Airport Business Development Manager, Manager of Air New Zealand Operation for Rotorua Airport and the Head of the Airport Fire Department. Next stop was Paradise valley springs where the students got up close and personal with Lions and a cute cub:) Later that night we headed out to Mitai, an awesome Maori Cultural experience set in stunning scenery. Story telling, a cultural performance followed by a yummy hungi rounded off the night.

Day 2 saw the students start their day at Agroventures where they learnt the importance of Adventure Tourism in New Zealand and also got to test their nerves on some extreme activities, Leoni (tutor) even braved the Swoop and showed the students what a real SCREAM sounds like! Next stop, Hotel Ibis and Novotel Rotorua for a hotel inspection…..and boy was the Royal Suite something! The day finished with a trip up to the Gondola and Luge where the students gave Andy (tutor) a run for his money down the luge tracks!

A fantastic trip had by all…………..we are now looking forward to Auckland in Term 2.

Yardlong Bean, also called Chinese Long Bean, is a vigorous climbing annual and the plant begins to produce long pods, ranging from 14 to 30 inches, 60 days after sowing. The pods hang in pairs that should be picked for vegetable uses before matured. Yardlong Bean is a subtropical/tropical plant and is widely grown in Southeastern Asia, Thailand and Southern China. It is a very interesting plant to grow – you almost need to check/harvest long beans everyday because they grow very quick in warm climates. It is, however, sensitive to the temperature and grows relatively slow in mild/cold environments. Like to grow common beans, it is recommended to rotate the planting locations every year for getting the best results – do not repeat planting at the same spots within 3-4 years. Edible pods are very crisp, tender and delicious. Long beans are cut into shorter sections and cooked like common green beans. There are many varieties grown in the Orient and they are generally identified by the color of the matured seeds.

21 students and 2 brave tutors spent the day learning about the importance of goal setting, trust and team-work. For some, climbing the ladder to get to the start of a pole was an achievement which was inspiring to see! For others, it was doing a forward roll on a rickety bridge 15 metres up in the air. There were lots of laughs, a few tears and no injuries.

Julie Kerry (The Esteemed Group Leader) -  After growing up in the Tourism and Hospitality business in Blackpool UK Julie travelled throughout the world sometimes accompanying her husband aboard his ships and at other times working in the USA for JCPenny and Sears. After working for Marks and Spencer PLC as Human Resources manager in a number of UK stores and after the births of three children Julie entered the tertiary sector. Gaining teaching qualifications she served on national committees writing national curricula for the Tourism and Leisure sector.
In 1990 Julie moved to New Zealand and has held various roles at the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic. Julie has retained close links with industry and serves as Board member for RTO- Tourism BOP. Julie is now the HSI Accommodation Sector National Committee.

Betty Ormsby (The High Flyer) – Betty Ormsby has had over 12 years in the Aviation Industry from Check n Staff, Flight Attendant to In-flight Service Manager and Flight Attendant Check & Trainer.  “It has been an unforgettable journey, to go to work at a speed of 800 kilometres per hour, climb to an altitude of 35,ooo feet, arrive at a new destination and get paid for it!  Having worked with amazing people, gained real industry experience I am excited to share my knowledge and skills with students who want to become a Flight Attendant and help make their dreams come true”.

Leoni Drew (Always has a travel deal) – Hi and welcome to our blog. I have been teaching at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic for 3 years, following a rather long spell in the travel industry (far to long to dwell).  My first position in travel was at the age of 15 years, when I offered to work for free in my local travel agency. I continued working there while at school and completing a degree at Waikato University.  I have worked in various supervisory and management roles both here in New Zealand and in the United Kingdom, focusing on wholesale and tour operator aspects. I also owned a travel agency in the UK.  Having returned to NZ in 2008 I love having the opportunity to share my passion (and the odd travel story or two!) in my role here as tutor on Travel Level 3 and Travel Level 4.  Outside of work I love to travel (of course!) whenever possible and yes I am definitely always looking for a travel deal to plan my next trip (trying to keep up with the gallivanting Andy!).

Andrew Cave (His weekends are for travel) – Hi everyone my name is Andy. My background is in the Travel and Wholesale industries. I have a Diploma in Tourism Majoring in Travel Management. I have worked in Travel Agencies for a few years and now own my own Booking Agency/Travel Wholesalers. I am passionate about the Tourism and Travel Industry and my interests include aviation, music, TRAVEL, food and wine. I teach on the National Certificate in Travel Levels 3 & 4. Favourite travel destination is anywhere in Asia. I recently did a brief OE in Ireland and was able to travel to some awesome places including Czech Republic, Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia and Vietnam. Next on my list for 2011 are Japan and Thailand!
